Before our very first night out, I stood in front of my closet for three solid hours, surrounded by a mountain of rejected clothes. I’m a 42-year-old mom from the suburbs. My daily uniform is basically Lululemon leggings and an oversized hoodie. So when Matt and I finally decided to step out into the lifestyle, I had a total meltdown trying to figure out what to wear to a swinger club.
I kept looking at my clothes thinking, Is this dress way too plain? Is that outfit trashy? Am I going to look like I got lost on my way to Target?
Honestly, we had no clue what we were doing. I assumed everyone inside would look like a supermodel draped in high-end latex or designer lingerie. Turns out I was completely wrong, but not before I made three embarrassing wardrobe mistakes before I finally figured out what to wear to a swinger club without completely losing my mind.
Mistake #1: Assuming my first time swinger club attire had to look like a costume
When I started searching online for first time swinger club attire, I panicked and ordered a cheap, plasticky faux-leather dress. In my head, I was going to walk in looking sleek and mysterious.
In reality, the dress squeaked every single time I took a breath.
By the time Matt and I walked from the parking lot to the front door, I was sweating bullets under this thick synthetic fabric. I spent the first forty-five minutes sitting on a leather couch, terrified to stand up because I knew the dress was going to make a loud suction sound against the cushion. I was so self-conscious about my noisy dress that I couldn’t even make eye contact with the couple sitting next to us.
Mistake #2: Overthinking the swinger club dress code and wearing painful heels
I’ve never been big on high heels, but I convinced myself that the official swinger club dress code required sky-high stilettos. I bought a strappy pair that looked amazing while I was sitting on the edge of my bed at home.
That confidence lasted about twenty minutes.
Navigating a dark club with slick floors, stairs, and crowded lounge areas in painful shoes was a nightmare. Halfway through the night, I had to limp to the bathroom just to take them off. That’s when I hit my second mistake: I was wearing a back-zipper jumpsuit that required full-body gymnastics and Matt’s help every time I needed to use the restroom.
I was so focused on trying to match some imaginary swinger club dress code that I completely forgot I needed to function like a normal person.
Mistake #3: Stressing over what do women wear to swinger clubs instead of wearing what made me feel comfortable
For our first few outings, I kept scouring the internet for lifestyle club outfit ideas, trying to copy what other women were wearing instead of sticking to what made me feel good. I wore stuff that felt like a tight, uncomfortable costume. I spent the whole night pulling down hems, adjusting straps, and worrying if my Spanx were showing.
It took me three awkward trips to realize something simple: when I looked around the room, women were wearing everything. Some ladies were in cute little sundresses, some were in classy cocktail dresses, and others were hanging out in cozy lounge sets. The women who looked the absolute hottest weren’t the ones in the tightest outfits; they were the ones who looked relaxed and comfortable.
When I stopped obsessing over what do women wear to swinger clubs and just put on a simple black wrap dress that let me breathe, drink, and dance, everything changed for me.
The Turning Point (And How We Survived the Parking Lot Panic)
During our second trip out, I was sitting in the passenger seat of our SUV in the parking lot, holding my purse like a shield, squeezing into a tight corset, and ready to cry. I turned to Matt and said, “I can’t go in. I look ridiculous and I don’t know how to talk to anyone like this.”
Matt reached into the glove box and pulled out a stack of index cards we had written on at our kitchen table a few weeks back. We had made a silly little game for ourselves because we were both terrified of awkward silences on our own date nights. We didn’t have a big business plan; we just desperately needed a fun distraction to get out of our own heads.
We sat in the car with the dome light on, asking each other the low-pressure questions we’d written down. Within ten minutes, we were laughing so hard my eyes were watering. It totally broke the tension. It reminded me that we were in this together, and that nobody inside was judging me as hard as I was judging myself.
That little homemade card deck—which eventually became our Swing & Play game—saved our night. It pulled my brain away from “What am I wearing?” and brought me back to “We’re here to have fun together.”
What Works for Me Now
These days, my personal routine for picking an outfit is pretty straightforward. I choose something soft, easy to take off (and put back on), and something that pairs well with low block heels or cute flats. If I can’t sit comfortably on a couch and drink a cocktail in it, it stays in the closet.
We’re still learning as we go, and we definitely don’t have it all figured out. But dropping the act—and the squeaky fake leather—made the whole lifestyle feel a lot more like us.
What about you guys? Did anyone else completely misjudge their very first outfit? Tell me your worst fashion blunders in the comments so Matt and I know we weren’t the only ones!
